Wellcome to Rock Kandy!

The name Rock Kandy is descriptive of the bright colors and glossy finishes of my multi-layered canvas creations. It especially suits my rock n roll themed works that can be found in hotels, casinos, and restaurants  throughout the world.

In addition to these pieces, I have focused my multi-layered canvas style on subject matter such as portraits, exotic and custom cars, animals, architecture, and musical instruments. Recently, I have begun work on sea and landscapes and will soon be adding those pieces to this site.

My past work, which is still a passion that I will be pursuing on an ongoing basis, focuses on mixed-media abstracts. My largest body of work consists of abstract prints which are derived from highly edited photographs. It is impossible to discern the original subject matter of the majority of these abstracts.  I take great pleasure in transforming the shapes and colors of mundane subject matter into images that beautify the spaces they inhabit, while stimulating the imagination of the viewer. I define these pieces as "Dynamic Static" This term represents the fact that the works themselves do not change in any way once they are completed, but they are ever changing based upon the uniqueness of each individual's experience of them. Additionally, each individual's experience of a given piece will likely change over time based upon their mood on a given day or upon gaining new experiences and insights throughout life.

Inspiration

My primary creative drive involves striving for originality in my work. Subject matter, in general, is far less of a concern to me than the way in which I choose to present it. That is a big plus for me in satisfying clients' commission requests. I enjoy incorporating my unique style and techniques in order to portray the client's concepts in a way that will provide them with something beyond the expectations of their imagination.

When creating non commissioned pieces, I generally gravitate toward mildly to highly abstract representations of common subjects such as trees, clouds, and mechanical devices. Sometimes the result shows these objects in a new way, from an uncommon perspective, or in a totally abstract way that gives no clue as to the origin of the subject matter.

Technique & Process

The technique in which I most enjoy working involves printing  edited photos/digital paintings on metallic canvas. I cut the prints into hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pieces and glue them to plywood foundations in multiple layers which creates a three dimensional effect. The pieces are then coated with glossy resin to create a glassy or glazed ceramic appearance. Although this process can be very tedious, it is also highly enjoyable.

My mixed media abstract works involve various materials, such as wood, glass, metal, aluminum foil, copper powder, wire and paint. Most of these works begin with little thought as to the finished product. I observe the interaction of the various materials and develop them to completion based upon those interactions. This is a very exciting process as I direct, rather than control it.
